Windows star Internet Explorer dies at 26

Microsoft Internet Explorer dies at 26

Internet Explorer is dead. After nearly 27 years, Microsoft has retired from IE today. The old web browser has been shut down in favor of Microsoft Edge, with IE 11 support officially dropping today. After the release of Windows 10 in 2015, Microsoft initially dropped the Internet Explorer brand, which was the end of the Internet era.

Microsoft Internet Explorer dies at 26

The old web browser has been shut down in favor of Microsoft EdgeThis change was made because Microsoft Edge is faster, more secure, and compatible with new web standards. The old web browser was based on the same engine as Google Chrome , and thus was not as fast or secure as Microsoft Edge. It also does not support some of the newer web standards that websites use today. By switching to Microsoft Edge, users will be able to take advantage of the latest features that the web has to offer.

For consumers, little has changed. Internet Explorer usage has declined in recent years, and StatCounter has shown that the IE browser market share is less than 0.5% of the total browser market share. Microsoft has been trying for years to prevent people from using Internet Explorer , which the company previously described as a compatibility solution rather than a browser that companies must actively use.

Microsoft will suggest a new ad

Microsoft will start rolling out a new ad in the coming months that will redirect those still using Internet Explorer to Microsoft Edge. Finally, as part of a future Windows update, Internet Explorer will be permanently disabled. You can read more about how Microsoft handles the removal of Internet Explorer on windows here.

Although Microsoft has made Chromium -powered Edge the default browser on Windows 11, the MSHTML engine that powers Internet Explorer is still part of Windows 11 . It's only in IE mode in Microsoft Edge, and Microsoft says it will support IE Edge mode until at least 2029.

Companies have largely moved to Edge's IE mode for web applications and websites that are so old that they still need Internet ExplorerMicrosoft created this IE mode for Edge in 2019, and it supports legacy ActiveX controls that many older sites still use. In the spirit of the Internet, I'm here to stay Explorer will pass this mode, but there will be no more cookies for Internet Explorer.

All companies will still be amazed after Internet Explorer stops

Some companies will still be surprised that they stop using Internet Explorer , or that they won't be able to completely remove its use in time. The Nikkei this week reported that some government agencies and financial institutions in Japan were slow to respond to IE's retirement. The Japan Pension Service website should continue to display in IE's Edge mode.

There are probably thousands of other companies and similar Internet Explorer use cases around the world. Microsoft warned that Internet Explorer was discontinued years ago today and still treats prompts and redirects with caution until the browser is completely removed in the coming months.

Windows 11 users do not have to worry about Internet Explorer because it does not have an accessible version of IE. This is the first time in more than 20 years that Microsoft IE has not compiled a new version of Windows. The bundling decision sparked notorious antitrust and antitrust lawsuits in the United States and Europe against Microsoft, causing polls on some versions of Windows .
